Todd Nelson Coaches Son’s Junior “A” Squad In Dallas

How did you spend YOUR All-Star break?

During the NHL All Star break, Edmonton Oilers coach Todd Nelson joined a new coaching staff – at least for the weekend. Todd’s son, Colton Nelson, is currently playing for the Junior “A” Oklahoma City Blazers of the Western States Hockey League where he has notched six goals and thirteen assists in twenty-four games. On a recent trip to play the Dallas Snipers (they would sweep the weekend), Todd Nelson took over as “bench boss” for a tender father / son moment.

Below is a lovely set of photos by Candace Riley, who has been doing remarkable work photographing the team this season. The moment was too precious and too unique not to share with you, and we are grateful that she gave us a glimpse in to one of my favorite moments of early 2015.

  1. Thank you, Neal. Words can’t describe how incredible it was to watch. I got so many more photos than this, and my only wish was that I could’ve gotten even more. I noticed he kind of started off a bit slow, but by the 3rd period (when I moved next to the bench), he had turned into that coaching machine we’re so used to seeing. 😀 It was amazing, especially knowing I was pretty much the only “actual photographer” in the rink. It’ll take a lot to top these photos, for me. I am truly blessed & privileged to be doing what I love for this team this season, and this was just a mountain of cherries & whipped cream & sprinkles on a giant sundae.
