The ECHL’s Wild West Central Division — December

Happy New Year to the ECHL’s new Central Division! In the past month we have seen some big surprises among the Central Division teams, primarily the Tulsa Oilers and their lackluster finish to 2014. The Quad City Mallards have leaped over Wichita to move into 2nd place, while Rapid City and Brampton have swapped places at the bottom of the Division. (Click to view October and November Division recaps.)

The Fort Wayne Komets are currently at the top of the ECHL league with a record of 23-6-1-0 (47 points). They are followed by the Florida Everblades and the Toledo Walleye with 45 points each, and the Central Division’s Allen Americans with 43 points. Allen also currently sits at the top of the Western Conference.

1 | Allen Americans – 13 games in December – 9-1-1-2 (21 points).

It comes as no surprise to anyone following ECHL league stats that the Allen Americans have started to separate from the rest of the Central Division with 43 points, and the Americans still have games-in-hand against most of this Division with the exception of Brampton with 27 games. The Allen Americans also are ranked No. 1 in the Western Conference.

Nov: 12 Games in November – 9-3-0-0- (18 points).

2 | Quad City Mallards – 14 games in December –  9-5-0-0 (18 points).

The biggest positive for the Mallards this month was their win over the top ranked Fort Wayne Komets 7-5. The most worrisome element of this month’s schedule is their 2 game loss to Brampton. Quad City’s head-to-head record so far this season against Brampton is 5-2-2-1 with Brampton’s record against Quad City 5-5-0-0, and the two teams will meet 5 more times this season. The Quad City Mallards are ranked 4th in the Western Conference.

Nov: 13 Games in November – 5-3-3-2 (15 points).

3 | Wichita Thunder – 12 games in December –  7-4-0-1 (15 points).

The Thunder had a very rough beginning to December but have roared back with 6 wins in their last 7 games. Their roadtrip games to Brampton and Elmira were fraught with disaster as they had to leave a top forward and top defenseman home due to Visa issues, and ended up with a short roster.  At the end of the month Wichita beat Allen twice, once in overtime 2-1, and the other in a shootout, 3-2, marking the Thunder’s first shootout win of the season. The Thunder are ranked 7th in the Western Conference.

Oct: 3 Games in October – 1-1-1-0 (3 points)

4 | Tulsa Oilers – 14 games in December –  4-10-0-0 (8 points).

The Oilers dropped from 1st place to 4th this month with a string of 10 losses in their 14 games. This is bad news for the offensively rich team, but don’t count them out of anything just yet. There’s plenty of time left for this team to regroup and seriously work on their defense to continue their playoff race, but Ramsay’s team has to turn it around quickly since they lead the group with 32 games played. The Oilers are ranked 8th in the Western Conference.

Oct: 4 games in October – 2-1-1-0 (5 points).

5 | Missouri Mavericks – 13 games in December –  6-4-1-2 (15 points).

The Missouri Mavericks are holding solid in 5th for now. A December highlight for the team was Captain Sebastien Thinel’s 1000th professional career point on December 30th in Wichita with two back-to-back goals in the 3rd period. This is not only a huge personal record for Thinel, but also sets a record as the first Missouri Mavericks player to reach that milestone. The Mavericks are ranked 9th in the Western Conference.

Oct: 3 Games in October – 1-2-0-0 (2 points).

6 | Rapid City Rush – 12 games in December –  7-4-0-1 (15 points).

The Rush have greatly improved from their October and November stats and have moved up from 7th last month. Rapid City has a better record than a number of higher ranked teams this month — Tulsa (4-10-0-0, 8 pts) and Missouri (6-5-1-2, 15 pts). If the Rush continue this push they could well be a surprise to some of the middle ranked teams. The Rush are ranked 13th in the Western Conference.

7 | Brampton Beast – 13 games in December = 3-10-0-0 (6 points).

The Brampton Beast continue to have trouble not only outside their division with two losses to Toledo, but also within their division. In an effort to rework the team’s roster Brampton recorded 12 separate player transactions in December, the most recent being the addition of 39-year-old veteran forward David Ling. The Beast are currently ranked 14th (last) in the Western Conference.
