Tyler Pitlick is NHL dreamin’ these days (and not playing entirely insufferable), and so the Oklahoma City Barons are lacking quality winger depth. They have a healthy roster, but it is tidy and neat, no excessive player waste. So when a forward leaves (Pitlick) and the one on waivers (Joensuu) is plotting an oversea change (supposedly), they are in need of a body. As a brief road swing begins in Grand Rapids on Friday, the Oklahoma City Barons have elected to recall Josh Winquist from the Bakersfield Condors.
No Chase Schaber. No Jones twins. Instead the Barons bring in the ECHL’s leading rookie scorer, Josh Winquist. The 21 year old from St. Albert who is a recent Silvertips alum, has etched 22 points in 18 games as a Condor.
J.F. Houle, coach of the Bakersfield Condors, had nothing but great things to say about his team’s leading scorer (via Bakersfield Californian):
“He’s leading the league in rookie points and they want to give him a look,” Condors coach J.F. Houle said from Boise, Ida., on Thursday. “You never know (how long Winquist might stick in the AHL). If he does a good job there they might want to keep him a long time. He deserves the opportunity.”
The Barons indeed are in Grand Rapids and Milwaukee for the weekend, with a stop in Cedar Park on Wednesday. Look for Winquist to hit the rotation early.
