Darcy Hordichuk Clears Waivers, CVV Recalled

Welcome, Darcy. Photo on Flickr.

Darcy Hordichuk, placed on waivers yesterday by the Edmonton Oilers, has cleared and will be assigned to the Oklahoma City Barons. To say that Darcy is an enigmatic figure in Oil Country would probably be doing the term a disservice. While the vast majority of fans and media believe he’s not the player the team needs, at least in the NHL, he does somewhat bring an interesting wrinkle to the Barons. This will be the first time Darcy Hordichuk has played in the minor leagues since 22 games with the Springfield Falcons in 2002-2003.

What’s interesting is that over the last couple of seasons, players being placed on waivers, and then sent to Oklahoma City, are rarely seen from in an Oilers capacity again. Zack Stortini, also a February (2011) waiver walker, played solid minutes on the farm, but landed in another city the following season. The banishment to the minors isn’t good when you’re a player like Hordichuk. It will be interesting to see how he handles the demotion.

Likewise, Erick Lizon, the Barons team “heavy”, might be rendered someone obsolete in all of this. On a PTO from the Wichita Thunder, he’s a fight-inducing player who’s not been needed all that much. Yet, a full run on his PTO might not be a bad thing in the wake of Oilers potential injuries. Not having roster limits also might work in Lizon’s favor.

Welcome to Oklahoma City, Darcy. Your first full rack of ribs are on me!

In other news, Chris VandeVelde will be recalled to the Oilers. Up, down, and up again.
