The national anthems at hockey games are very much a part of the game itself. On most nights one anthem suffices in the American League, but when a team from the north wanders to Oklahoma the call is made to our resident Canadian anthem singer.
Hockey will always be Canada’s game, but at hockey games where both anthems are sung it feels like it could be anyones. It feels like the combining of two groups of fans under one common love of one particular sport. That’s a thing of beauty.
When the Moose, Heat, or Marlies come to town I look for both flags hanging in the rafters as the anthems begin. In a world divided by so much, it’s the simple things that can draw us together.
