24 Days Until Barons Hockey – “Petry”

Easily the most impressive Barons defender through an entire season, Jeff Petry is the guy that others will be chasing in training camp to earn a final defensive roster spot with the Oilers. The first time I watched Petry play I remember using the word “pesky”, but his game has grown much deeper. After an 09-10 season where he jumped to the Springfield Falcons following three years of successful collegiate hockey, his skills have been honed as time soldiers on. By the time that he reached the Oilers this season, he was head and shoulders above the next available Barons defender. Known for his quick back and forth skating, a tenacity in front of the net, and very good hands, Jeff Petry has worked the system beautifully.

As a 2006 second rounder, this is the year he needs to breakout in a big way. He’ll need to earn shutdown line time to prove that, but I’m convinced that he’ll show well in camp, and impress fans and managers alike.

For the kid that idolizes Nick Lidstrom and enjoys fishing in his down time, now is the time to really shine.
